Otto Gothenberg

Otto Gothenberg, age 96 of Blaine, born September 22, 1907, to Ole and Sara Gothenberg in Aurdahl, Valdres, Norway.
The family included one sister, Gyda, and two brothers, Syver and Helge, now all deceased.
His family emigrated near Viking, Minnesota in 1914, where Ole married, and gave him a half- sister, Louise, now living in Goshen, NY
He worked at many jobs, including lumberjacking in Wyoming, the Pacific
Northwest, and Alaska; mining in Kennecott, AK; and steel working andauto working in Duluth and in Flint,MI. In 1937, he started fishing in Alaska, mostly near Cordova.
He served in the Navy during WWII, became a lieutenant, and served in the Aleutian, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Hiroshima Campaigns. He received the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze starts, WWII Victory Medal, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with “Asia” Clasp. His ship, the USS Detroit, was present at the signing of the peace treaty in Tokyo Bay in September, 1945. On his return to civilian life, he resumed fishing until his retirement. In February, 1958
He is survived by his sister; his nieces, including Marilyn Larson, Shirley Johnson, Mary Labine, Marlyce Johnson, Karen Blanchette, and Judy Hassenstab; his nephew, Dale Stark; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Most of his family remains in Minnesota.
Otto was an outdoor person who loved fishing, hunting, and hiking. He had a wonderfully balanced mind and sparkling humor, and charmed all who knew him no matter where he went.
Memorials may be made to the Stafholt Good Samaritan Center, 456 C Street, Blaine, WA 98230; or to his much beloved church, Grace Lutheran, 702 G Street, Blaine, WA 98230. A Memorial Service will be held in his honor at Grace Lutheran Church on Wednesday, August 4th at 2 pm, followed by a reception.
